Calvert Vaux, co-designer of Central Park, created Belvedere Castle in 1869 as a whimsical structure looking out on the reservoir to the north (now the Great Lawn and Turtle Pond) and the Ramble to the south. The Belvedere ("beautiful view" in Italian) provides the highest and best views of the Park and the adjacent cityscape. 🏰 Thanks to @martinamadonia for this photo!
It's Saturday — a great day to visit Conservatory Water! Rent a model boat or gather around the nearby Hans Christian Andersen statue for storytelling at 11:00 am. ⛵️🌤 Thanks to @ptree123 for this photo.
Happy 164th birthday, Central Park! Watch our Instagram Story to learn more about the Park's history, and share your own memories and photos using the hashtag #HBDCentralPark . 🎂 This is a vintage photo of the Dairy (in the middle of the Park between 64th and 65th Streets), which originally served as a quiet retreat for children and their caregivers. Families came to drink milk, eat pastries, and enjoy cool breezes. Today, it is the Dairy Visitor Center & Gift Shop. Thanks to @nypl for this photo from their public domain collection.
There's nothing like a relaxing picnic in Central Park. 🌤 Some of our favorite picnic spots include Sheep Meadow, the Harlem Meer, and the Great Lawn. What are yours? 🌳🍃 Thanks to @carlyflowr for this photo!
