WHAT IS MY LIFE RIGHT NOW!!!!! My childhood hero, Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, just posted about me on Facebook!!!! I'm feeling so many feelings at once that I can only name it shock.
I was 7 when I listened to my first CD. It was a brand new copy of Peter, Paul and Mommy Too. Listening to Puff, Inside, and Right Field made me laugh. Garden Song, Somos El Barco, Home on the Range/Don't Ever Take Away My Freedom, and Poem for Erika/For Baby made me think. The last song starts with Peter saying that the next song was one they sang on marches and with Dr. King and that it was our turn to learn the song. He and the children sang the great spiritual We Shall Overcome. I tried to hold back my tears as not to upset my Marine Veteran father in the other room. As you may know, Marines don't cry. After singing three verses, Peter instructed everyone to hum. The children kept to the melody while Peter's voice moved around theirs in a simple but moving harmony. I couldn't contain my emotions any longer. I let out a cry that shook the walls. My father ran into the room looking over my body asking "What's wrong? Where are you hurt?" When I finally caught my breath, I looked into his eyes a said, "It's so beautiful." That wasn't my first step. It was my first push. Who knew the world could be that beautiful? It taught me even then at 7 years old that music was more than words and notes. Music had the ability to be peace and love.
Thank you, Peter, for the lifeline you threw me that day. Thank you for showing us all peace and love one song at a time.
