Silica sand mine located outside of Goodhue, MN near Red Wing. I came across this mine while searching for a historical deposit of Cretaceous stoneware originally used by Red Wing Stoneware in the early 1900s. While the recorded clay deposit was nowhere to be found, it was amazing to see this deposit emerge out of flat crop land.
This small scale mining operation is digging into the St. Peter Sandstone, a 99% pure silica sedimentary rock deposited over parts of Minnesota roughly 458 million years ago. The grains themselves are much older - ranging from 1 - 2.6 billion years old.
