DYK on this day in #MoorHistory365 that on April 27, 2007, the first #moor#woman trekked to the #NorthPole . 75 year old #BarbaraHillary , of Averne, N.Y., made the #journey . At 67 and during retirement, she battled lung cancer. Five years later, she went dog sledding in #Quebec and photographed polar bears in #Manitoba . Then she heard that a black woman had never made it to the North Pole. "I said, `What's wrong with this picture?'" she said. "So I sort of rolled into this, shall we say." On April 18, she arrived in #Longyearben , #Norway . Five days later, she set off on #skis with two trained guides. As the sunlight glinted off the ice, Hillary fought beneath a load of gear and pressed on. In her euphoria at reaching the Pole, standing at the top of the world, she made it. The enormous expanse of ice and sky left Hillary speechless. She hopes her journey will inspire hope in other cancer #survivors . With her feet back on dry land in New York, she is already plotting a new adventure: that of a global-warming activist. She said. "I'd like to go and lecture to different groups on what they can do on a grass-roots level to fight global warming." Barbara Hillary is the first #Alkebulan#AbyaYala woman on record to reach both the North and #SouthPole . Born in New York City, New York on June 12, 1931 to Viola Jones Hillary and raised in #Harlem , Hillary attended the New School University in New York, N.Y. where she earned both her Bachelor of Arts and Master’s degrees. She used her studies in Gerontology to establish a career in nursing, focusing on staff training in the concepts of patient aging and their service delivery systems in nursing homes and similar facilities. She was also founder and Editor-in-Chief of #ThePeninsulaMagazine , a non-profit and multi-racial magazine in #Queens , #NewYork . This magazine was the first of its kind in the region. Hillary has also had a notable career in community activism. She is the founder of the #ArverneActionAssociation , Inc., a group dedicated to improving life in #Arverne , New York and the #Rockaway#Peninsula Community. #luvmor#love#melanin
I just realized that my first arctic destination, above latitude 66º, was Svalbard & Jan Mayen, in latitude 78º. In that moment I was just in Iceland before going to this place, but the highest there was latitude 64º. So yeah, Longyearbyen was the first Polar Artic Circle-Town. This picture does not have the best quality but it means a lot. I don't think you will have seen many argentinians that have visited the place where there are more polar bears than humans, the place where svalbard global seed vault is, the place where if you go out the town alone the risk to be attacked by a polar bear is really high. However it is a very amazing place. My next arctic chance will have part in this place again. I had to take a tour to go up this hill(where I took the picture), the guide brought a rifle and 2 arctic dogs because they can smell the polar bears from very far away and also drive them away.
