FINAL WEEKEND to take your friends to see 'TRIBE' - my EXHIBITION (ends Tuesday) at @batherspavilion Balmoral Beach. I'll be there this arvo. Mb 041 9 997 556.
Check out artworks like this one of Paul Whatuiraâ... 'Prince Whatuira' 2007 6/25
I created this artwork as part of a series embracing Ta Moko (Maori tattoo) as a powerful visual form to communicate oneâs identity through family ancestry.
Sydney based Paul Whatuira originates from Wainuiomata and is of Tainui and Ngati Kahungunu tribal afï¬liations. Paul is a two-time NRL premiership-winner (with The West Tigers, and prior with The Penrith Panthers). He was also a New Zealand Kiwi Rugby League Test star and symbolises the modern day warrior as the sporting hero.
Paul exudes a conï¬dent and meaningful self pride for his native culture through his Ta Moko, yet it was to be a decade later when itâs true value and meaning would reveal itself. Paul turned to our Maori culture and learnt Te Reo (the Maori language) as a source of healing when he faced a deep and long personal battle, dealing with a delayed childhood trauma.
The background setting was a work in progress of artist Darcy Nicholas. Darcyâs painting pays homage to the Maori Queen, Dame Te Atairangikaahu, who passed away in 2006, and her son became the new King and Maori leader.
EXHIBITION AT THE BATHERS' PAVILION GALLERY upstairs above the Cafe and Restaurant. FREE ENTRY. Open early until late ie: whenever the cafe/restaurant are open). #tribal#TRIBE#mosman#balmoralbeach#batherspavilion#sydney#photography#artist#maoriartist#maori@canonaustralia@queensberrynz@tuta_tuheke
