Vincent Van Gogh
1888, Oil on canvas
Completely unplanned and unintentionally, it's turning into Van Gogh Day on this page! This year has been about getting to know our new home, so I haven't done much to the gardens. It's been an observational process, watching to see what we already have. By the clothesline, someone planted a forest of tall flowers, such as delphiniums and hollyhocks. They look really pretty (I'll post a photo). Last night I was wondering if tall sunflowers would look nice in the mix. I'm drawn to cottage gardens, but I do like them to have an edge of formality -- and there is nothing more informal than a big, beaming sunflower. The thing is, our neighbour at our old home used to plant them and the birds loved the seeds (and I loved to photograph them) so I got the best of both worlds. Maybe I should make a grove of them in a separate corner, in their own sunshine-y bit. Sunflowers seem essential for a witchy woman garden (a look I also like). Possible garden themes: impressionist painting. Neoimpressionist painting. Cottage garden. Witches garden. Hmm. Deciding.
