Complete collection of Jean de La Fontaine’s illustrated Fables available on www.wallector.com -http://ow.ly/9Zjl30aysxu -
Jean de La Fontaine’s Fables appeared in various books from 1668 to 1694. This edition was published by Charles-Antoine Jombert.
J.B. Oudry, a French painter, textile designer and engraver, created these illustrations between 1729 and 1734 (276 drawings, including frontispiece).
The wonderful images in this virtual exhibition are drawn from the volume: Fables choisies, mises en vers par J. de La Fontaine. Tome Quatrieme, chez Desaint & Saillant. (Selected Fables put into verse by J. De La Fontaine, Volume Four, at Desaint & Saillant’s.).
The four books were published between 1755 and 1760; in 1751, Oudry sold his complete set of drawings to the connoisseur and collector Jean-Louis Regnard de Montenault, who decided to reproduce them as prints and publish them in illustrated book form.
Since Oudry’s illustrations were freely drawn, they were ill-suited to serve as models for engravers. Montenault therefore commissioned Charles-Nicolas Cochin the Younger to make copies of each of Oudry’s drawings in a more linear style. Cochin’s drawings were then used by the larger team of engravers who worked on the project.
Cochin redesigned the original drawings, improving the figures and backgrounds and providing precise lines for the engravers to follow. The prints produced from Oudry’s drawings not only managed to portray the animals in a natural way but also depicted the countryside and rural scenes captivatingly and with authority.
The four volumes introduce all of Jean de La Fontaine’s Fables in turn, each one accompanied by a full-page illustration.
Cochin’s prints in this edition of the French poet’s Fables are rare and precious works that successfully capture the most significant moments of the stories represented, and do so with incomparable delicacy. #art#artistic#artoninstagram#artist#artoftheday#arts#finearts#engraving#rarebook#rarebooks#illustration#illustrations#illustrator#illustrationart#illustratedbooks
