Our survivor story pick of the day is #SolangeKnowles . In a letter to her younger self, the singer confessed that seventeen was the hardest year of her life. Little did she know, her best friend would be tragically killed in a drive-by shooting. "She was hit by a stray bullet during a fight in the parking lot. It was really hard for me because she had literally just left my house," Solangé explained. A week later, the singer learned that she was expecting her son Julez. "I was terrified because I didn't know what the future would be like. Some people counted me out, because I made a decision to bring another life into the world so young," she goes on. Life as a teenage mom was "isolating and lonely," and by her early twenties, her first marriage ended in a divorce. "In a lot of ways, emotionally and mentally, I feel far older than my age. I think I had a bit of a jump-start when my growing pains transitioned into wisdom, earlier than expected," she shared. Then came the news from a doctor, Solangé wasn't prepared to hear or accept. "I was diagnosed with ADHD twice. I didn’t believe the first doctor who told me and I had a whole theory that ADHD was just something they invented to make you pay for medicine, but then the second doctor told me I had it," she revealed. At times, her high level of energy and sporadic speech, made her a victim of bullying and was even labeled as a drug addict. As life threw curveballs her way, music became an outlet to channel her emotions into something positive. Not only has Solangé defied the odds, the creative genius has surpassed them. "There will be pain, there will be joy, and there will be the unknown. Most importantly, there will be you, and you will feel good about who she is, and who she is still becoming," #Solange concludes in the letter to her younger self. #mentalhealth#beatyourblues#dcmillennials#dmvladies#dmvwomen#womenofcolor#saveourgirls#blackgirljoy#griefsupport#blackgirlsrock#blackgirlmagic#dmvgirls#blackgirlpower#minoritymentalhealth#blackmentalhealth#blackmindsmatter#womensmentalhealth#mentalhealthmatters#blackwomenrock#mentalhealthawareness#girlempowerment
